The impending nuptials of Sania and Shoaib throw up interesting issues.
They are from two different countries. They are sportspersons. They are Muslims. Shoaib has had a broken telephonic marriage and Sania a broken engagement to a Muslim businessman. Sania talked of her unflinching faith to the Muslim religion just one week before breaking off her engagement to the businessman.
We are talking here of elites, sportspersons, crossing nationalities when you are a brand to reckon with. Shoaib wants Sania to represent India at the 2012 Olympics. Terrific. Some Indian husbands will not allow their wives to work. Coming from the upper most sports echelons of society, the normal rules of marriage and courtship don’t apply to these two. They break their own rules, society’s rules be damned. Even the rules of Muslim society, which humbler Muslims have no option but to embrace, do not apply to them.
Sachin Tendulkar wants to bring in a top end international car through the back door from abroad seeking waiver of duties, Kapil Dev sheds tears on the TV camera claiming that he is not part of match fixing, Tiger Woods’ whole cricket team of girlfriends proves he is more potent of the links than on them … sportspersons do lead an enviable life. Talented they are, but at what price?
